Elmer E. Morgan Sr. served Herkimer High School as physical education teacher and coach for almost four decades starting in 1920. Coach Morgan's better than .500 record overall in 25 seasons of basketball and baseball was topped by his 36 year football record. Averaging two wins for every loss, it includes two amazing streaks of 27 straight wins and 8 unbeaten teams.

Coach Morgan was born in Plymouth, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1895.

After graduating from high school there, he attended Springfield College where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. Following graduation from college in 1918, he served in the army as a sports director at Fort Dix.

Mr. Morgan taught and coached at Rensselaer High School for a year before corning to Herkimer in 1920. The father of five children, he wrote a book in the early twenties called "Basketball for Coaches", a work recommended highly by authorities of the game. He served as director of Herkimer playgrounds from 1927 to 1937 and, for over 25 years, was a town councilman in Herkimer.

Coach Morgan's outstanding football teams in 1924 and 1930 were recognized as mythical State Champions. He was inducted into the Utica College Hall of Fame in 1964.
