"Joe White epitomizes what high school basketball is all about," raved Bishop Ford (Brooklyn, NY) High School basketball coach Ray Nash. "It's not about him; it's about the players." So goes the coaching life of Joe White.

Joe began his career at St. Peter's grammar school where he also saw duty as the school's track and cross-country coach. In the 1970s, Joe's teams dominated the old CYO league, winning the City of Utica Championship in 1972-73. At St. Peter's, Joe coached 2004 Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame Inductee and former All-American Division III Hamilton College star Kevin Grimmer and former Division I standout Mike Durr, the current coach at Notre Dame High School where Joe moved on to after his 15 year tenure at St. Peter's.

In two stints as head coach of the Boys varsity basketball team at Notre Dame, Joe posted a 175-88 record, finishing his career as the winningest coach in Juggler history up to that point.

Joe's teams won five Central Oneida League titles, four Tri-Valley League titles and four Section II titles. In 1991-1992, Joe's Juggler team made the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's Final Four and in 1984-1985 his team was the Western Regional Runner-Up. Joe was named Central Oneida League Coach of the Year three times and Tri- Valley League Coach of the Year four times during his stellar career.

Some notable players that played for the revered "Coach" White besides Grimmer and Durr include: Bob Pennefather who played Division I basketball at the Air Force Academy, Steve Babiarz and Leroy Witherspoon who were All-Americans at SUNY Potsdam, and Scott Dorrity and Mark Burnham who were All-Americans at Hamilton College. Numerous other players went on to have solid careers in college after playing high school basketball for Joe.

Joe was previously inducted into both the St. Peter's Hall of Fame and the Notre Dame/Brother More Athletic Hall of Fame, and was also honored with the Friend of S1. Peter Award, the Notre Dame Award and the Marian Club Award, which he shared with his wife Mary Lou.

"Cream rises to the top," Coach Ray Nash said about Joe. He is absolutely right.
