Mike Tomassetti is affectionately referred to as the "patriarch of New York Mills basketball." According to Mike Adey, his successor as coach of the Varsity Boy's basketball team, Mike is "the person who set the tone for Marauders basketball and the reason why our program is where it's currently at."

In his twenty-six year career, Mike amassed a record of377-194. Throughout his lengthy tenure, Mike stressed that basketball is not just a game, but a lesson on how to live life. He imparted to his players that if they were successful on the court, they would be successful in life. He offered guidance, advice and direction to everyone who put on a New York Mills uniform, and the he never hesitated to put aside his work to assist a current or former player. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, Mike embodied the word "Coach" and conveyed his wisdom to each young man who laced up their sneakers.

Mike's leadership guided numerous young men to wonderful careers on the hardwoods. He led his teams to 11 Center State Conference Championships. He guided his players to 6 Section III Championships. His teams made five Final Four appearances in the New York Public High School Athletic Association's state basketball tournament. Finally, in 1982, Mike reached the ultimate pinnacle of his coaching career when his team won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D and the New York State Federation Championship.

In 1988, Mike was chosen as the Section III Coach of the Year, and as a result of his record on and off the court, Mike was honored with induction into the Section III Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Many of Coach Tomassetti's former players have gone on to fine careers in college. Some have even carried on their coach's legacy by becoming coaches themselves. They had a tremendous role model in Mike to learn how to be the best coaches they could be. "Mike Tomassetti is certainly one of the best coaches to come out of our area," Mike Adey added. "He is not only one of the best coaches, but he is also one of the finest and most caring people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. It has been an honor following in his footsteps."
