In three football seasons at Hamilton College, "Mercury" Milt Jannone scored more touchdowns (25) than the four previous Continental teams combined. The talented tailback hit his peak in 1941 when he led the East ill touchdowns, scoring 16 in seven games, and rushed for 719 yards, both school records that endured for 43 years.

He attained national recognition in 1942 when an article in The Saturday Evening Post entitled "The Secret All-American" compared him favorably with such legends as Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and Tom Hannon. He was later named a Little All-American in football.

Born in Beverly, N.J., on Aug. 27, 1921,Jannone's family moved to Utica when he was 10, and to Waterville When he was 12. Since Waterville High School did not have a football team, Jannone starred in everything else-soccer, basketball, track, baseball and tennis. He entered Hamilton College in 1940. He was limited to one track season (his sophomore year) because of the World War II urgency. By competing in seven events each time out-the dashes, weights and jumps-he averaged 19 points per dual meet.

Although only 5-feet-11 and 173 pounds, he showed outstanding rebounding and defensive playas a three-year starting center on Hamilton's basketball team. In his senior year, he was co-captain of the football team and captain of the basketball team.

After graduation from Hamilton in 1943, Jannone served as a reserve officer with the U.S. Navy. He received his M.A. in education from Syracuse University in 1951.

He taught English and Social Studies al Waterville High School for 10 years. In 1957, he joined the faculty at Mohawk Valley Community College. He was a professor and coordinator of social sciences upon his retirement in 1983.

He has remained active in a variety of community activities. He was a co-founder of the Central New York Soccer Officials Association. He is the athletic representative on the Hamilton College Board of Trustees, and served on the Waterville Board of Education and its Parent Teachers Association.
