"I bleed red and blue," said Tom Wells.  He should as his name is synonymous with the words "New Hartford" and "championship."  They are all interchangeable.  Whether in Swimming, Track & Field or in Cross Country, Wells' New Hartford Senior Hich School teams have always achieved unparalleled success.

After beginning his career as an Assistant Track Coach in Whitesboro in 1966, Wells was appointed Head Coach the following year.  From there, he went to New Hartford as Head Track Coach in 1970.  He has never left.  Throughout his tenure with the Spartans, Wells has expanded his repertoire dramatically.

As a Track & Field Coach and as a Cross Country Coach at New Hartford for 43 years, Wells' teams have thus far produced (6) six Section III Championships en route to winning 329 dual meets.  His responsibilities have gone beyond that of a coach, and have included serving as Assistant Coordinator of the New York State Boys' Track and the Section III Chairperson for Boys' Track for more than two decades.  His teams have also won several Tri-Valley League titles and numerous Section III titles throughout his career.

In 1986, Wells' coaching career expanded on what was to be an interim basis.  As a trial, he was appointed head coach of the Girls' Swim Team at New Hartford.  Quickly, it morphed into a permanent position for the astute Wells.  Over the course of the last 27+ years, Wells' swim squads have attained an outstanding (11) eleven Section III Girls Swim Team Championships, including (9) nine in a row from 1997-2005, and an unprecedented (12) twelve New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B Girls Swim Team Championships.  One can see why Wells' name is synonymous with the word "champion."

Wells previously served as the Empire State Games Central Region Director for Swimming, the Section III High School Swim Chairman, and the Head Coach of New Hartford Aquatics.  Wells' skills are not relegated to high school athletics as Hamilton College has been a second home for him as he is currently in his seventh season as an Assistant Coach with the Continentals' Swimming and Diving programs.

Wells served as a New Hartford Physical Education Teacher for 37 years.  He graduated with a degree fro Springfield College in 1966 and earned his master's from Syracuse University in 1971.  The New Hartford resident has two grown children, Stacy and Jim.  Stacy was a swimmer at Syracuse University and Jim was an All-American swimmer at the University of Southern California.
