New Hartford's Wayne Levi is not a typical Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour player.

He doesn't play week in and week out. He doesn't live in a warm weather state where he can play golf year-round.

Levi, 37, was born in Little Falls and grew up in Herkimer and attended Herkimer High School. He has since lived in Whitesboro and New Hartford.

Levi, who started playing golf at age 13, won the 1970 New York State scholastic title while at Herkimer High. He never lost a match during high school and lost only once while playing for Oswego State, where he was named small-college AlI-American in 1971 and 1972. He later transferred to the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Levi was the Tournament of Champions' junior boys winner in 1968 before winning the men's title in 1970 and 1971. The next year, he won the Greater Utica City Amateur.

He turned pro in 1973 and won the New Hampshire Open. He qualified for the PGA Tour in the spring of 1977 and won his first PGA tournament the following year.

This year, his 14th, Levi has won $31,560 in seven tournaments. He has won $2,384,412 going into this years Masters, along with eight victories. He is coming off his best year, $499,292 in earnings, even though he did not win. The New Hartford native teamed with Bob Mann to win the Walt Disney World National Team Play tournament in 1978. Levi has also won the Houston Open (1979); Pleasant Valley-Jimmy Fund Classic (1980); Hawaiian Open and LaJet Classic (1982); Buick Open (1983); B.C. Open (1984) and the Georgia Pacific Atlantic Classic in 1985.

Levi teamed with George Burns to win the 1988 Chrysler Team Championship.
