An outstanding golfer, a tireless golf tournament promoter and prolific golf writer for the Utica Press and Observer-Dispatch, "Cash" Garvey never did anything just once. As a golfer, she was eight-time city amateur champion, twice Oneida County champion, three-time state senior champion and won 14 local club championships. As a tournament promoter, she organized the prestigious Jenny Open from 1960 to 1984 and as a sports writer, she covered golf for the Utica Newspapers for over 25 years.

Born Catherine Lynch in Utica, she moved, at an early age, to Dover, Delaware where she graduated from high school After her parents died, she moved back to Utica to live with her grandmother, Margaret Milligan, and graduated from the Utica School of Commerce.

After her marriage to Robert Garvey, her husband's business took the young couple on the road and she started her golf game. After returning to Utica, she started her string of championships.

Mrs. Garvey founded the Mohawk Valley Golf Association in the early 1940s and served as its president and treasurer. In addition to covering golf for the Press and Observer-Dispatch, she reported on the Clinton Comets hockey team for over 25 years. In addition to the Jenny Open, she also helped establish the Mohawk Valley Open, the Utica City Amateur and the O.D. and Daily Press Tournament of Champions.

"Cash" Garvey still gets out to play golf, although she misses not being able to walk the 18 holes.
