After excelling at the high school level in three sports at Holland Patent Central, Diane Hobin left her family's farm for Long Island and did the same thing as a three-sport, NCAA Division I star at Hofstra University, where she became one of the most versatile and decorated athletes in school history while competing in basketball, softball and field hockey for the Pride from 1991 to 1996.

More than once referred to as the "Queen of the Knights" while playing for Holland Patent's Golden Knights, Hobin went on to earn Hofstra University's "Outstanding Female Athlete Award" twice during her four years at the Hempstead, New York school, and she was inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Diane, who passed away at age 46 on September 27, 2020, was recruited to play Division I basketball at Hofstra. As a point guard on the Pride basketball team, she scored 1,061 points and added 538 assists and 216 steals in her career. She ranks third in career assists, eighth in steals, and 22nd in points. She led the team in assists in each of her four seasons, and was the leading three-point shooter in 1993-94 and 1994-95.

During her four seasons on the field hockey team, Diane scored 18 goals and added 18 assists. Her assist total ranks 10th all-time.

As a member of the softball program, Diane was a part of NCAA Tournament teams in 1993 and 1995, and an ECAC Championship team in 1993. She batted .345 with 184 hits, 98 runs, 55 RBIs, and 23 doubles during her career. She led the team in batting in 1995, posting a .393 average with a team and conference-best 68 hits. A two-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection, Diane was twice named Hofstra’s Outstanding Female Athlete (1994 and 1995) during her tenure in Hempstead.

Following her 1995 graduation with a degree in psychology, Diane spent four years at Stony Brook University as both head softball coach and assistant to the athletic director. She left Stony Brook to become the National Account Manager for CyberSports, Inc., in New Hartford, New York.

Diane then served as assistant to the head coach of the University of Illinois women’s basketball program before moving on to a role with US Junior National Girls Basketball.

Diane, the daughter of Irving and Donna Hobin, played Pop Warner football as a youngster and later earned 10 varsity letters while at Holland Patent Central and 11 more at Hofstra. As "Queen of the Knights," she was an all-state athlete in basketball, field hockey, and softball. Named the Oneida Daily Dispatch "Athlete of the Year" in 1991, Diane was a nine-time Tri Valley League all-star.

In basketball, Diane was twice named the TVL's Most Valuable Player, and she was second on Holland Patent's career scoring list. In field hockey, she led the Golden Knights to Section III and regional titles in 1990, and she was the school's career leader in goals, assists, and points. In softball, she was a .529 career hitter.

Diane also was an exceptional student-athlete at Holland Patent, where Barb Felice coached her in three sports for five years. During that time as a basketball and field hockey star, Diane was so team-oriented and so unselfish Coach Felice had to persuade her to shoot more. She was very coachable, too - "You said it, she went out and did it," Coach Felice said - and when a coach was needed on the field or court, Diane answered the call.
